Team 10 – Solar Panel Locator

Team Members:

Description:

With the ever-increasing importance of the energy sector in recent times, solar power provides a unique opportunity for individuals to contribute to the cause from their homes. Individual solar panels on the roofs of houses can offset the demand for power across the nation. In order to provide better understanding of the current state of solar power in the United States, this project will use aggregated satellite imagery of residential buildings to determine how many solar panels exist in subsets of the fifty states. A public database
will provide socio-demographic information which, when used in conjunction with the data on solar power, will provide useful insight into the variables determining whether a given residence is likely to have solar panels. These results will be used to address concerns in the states comprising the EPSCoR jurisdictions which are less competitive in solar power research at the national level.
